    Context

About the Peloponnese in one day

The Peloponnese — the large peninsula south of Athens, separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal — holds more UNESCO sites and continuously inhabited ancient cities than almost any region of comparable size in the world. A private day from Athens cannot do it justice, but it can do something better: introduce you to the three or four places that, taken together, explain why this part of Greece matters.

Our private Peloponnese day journey covers the classic eastern loop. We leave Athens after breakfast, cross the Corinth Canal (a dramatic 80-metre cut through solid rock, completed in 1893), continue to the ancient theatre of Epidaurus (where the acoustics are so refined that a coin dropped on the stone stage can be heard clearly from the back row, fifty metres away), and arrive in Nafplio for an unhurried seaside lunch. The afternoon adds Mycenae — the citadel that gave the Mycenaean civilisation its name, the home of Agamemnon, and the place where Heinrich Schliemann famously declared he had 'gazed upon the face of Agamemnon' in 1876.

Nafplio is the centrepiece. Greece's first modern capital (briefly, in the 1820s), it remains the country's most refined small town: Venetian fortresses, neoclassical houses, narrow streets that climb between bougainvillea, and a waterfront promenade that earns the long lunch we always recommend.

The day runs roughly nine hours. From €460 it includes the private vehicle and English-speaking driver, hotel pickup and drop-off, on-board Wi-Fi and water, and a small Greek farewell gift. Site tickets and lunch are paid on the day. Guests who want to slow the journey down — and most do, after seeing it once — extend to the two-day version with an overnight in Nafplio.

    • Mycenae adds significant time — most travellers choose either Mycenae OR Nafplio's old town to keep the day unhurried. For all three properly, our 2-Day Peloponnese Journey is the better fit.

    In Their Own Words

    From recent guests

“We took a private trip to Delphi with Gregory. He wasn't a 'taxi' driver — he was a host to Athens and the surrounding areas. Excellent and skillful driver, knew the roads to take when there was traffic, full of knowledge of Greece. Wonderful conversations and perfect recommendations for our stops. I fully recommend him.”

“We were lucky to engage Greg at the Athens Airport after another driver refused to take us into the city. He was personable, gave us the lowdown on Athens, and got us to our Airbnb in record time through the back streets. We used him again for a trip outside the city for seven of us — flying colors. I would contact him again in a heartbeat.”
